The Raspberry Pi isn't open source. Broadcom only releases their firmware as binaries.

I know, it is a concern, the hardware is as open and there is work afoot to release a completely open source pi, not sure how far they have got
No the hardware is not open, there are no released schematics or layouts, and you cannot buy the chips from Broadcom.
I'd be very surprised if Broadcom released the source code for their firmware. It would probably have to be a complete rewrite from reverse engineered specifications, like the original IBM PC BIOS was cloned. Except a lot more difficult as these firmwares are comparatively huge.
I agree, though I did see some interesting projects, I don't have time to get involved though
