Why is the vertical resolution so poor?

It is not. Is is a very wide screen. 24:10 aspect.

A UHD/4k pixel density that you would find in a 16:9 display would mean a lot more horizontal pixels.

Though I would like to see one that is 5184x2160 or 5760x2160 pixels. I expect that is just too expensive and niche atm. And pushing gfx cards and display ports to its limits.
