Honestly, this is an issue with having absolutely terrible browsers. This sort of thing should be easy to do without having to know javascript. The user just has so little power with the user interface they're given for interacting with the internet. Obviously, this will change over time, but the transition period is very frustrating.

A trouble is it's a moving target. As soon as you sort one annoyance they'll invent a new one. That said Chrome could really do with a simple do not autoplay video setting.

Not to mention sound.

At least they added the feature to mute a tab. No more hunting for that one ad that's making sounds.
