So in the past when there were less people per square miles on Earth there was less space and people had to share beds?

Heated rooms were for kings and aristocrats, everybody else had to share smaller rooms to keep the heat if they lived in colder climates.
Homes have gotten much larger as humans have become more wealthy on average. Compare the 1500 sq ft 1950s suburban home to today's 3000+ sq ft McMansions.
That really depends on the country. Many farmer houses (in warm areas) in Europe are much bigger that the average city house.
