When the product is really important, we should change how we reward development, because if it's expensive, and we grant a monopoly, then the benefits of the product will be concentrated with the wealthy, rather than the many. And yes, that's not a good thing. Consider prizes instead of patents: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prizes_as_an_alternative_to_pa... We don't need to have a government enforced monopoly to support high prices to fund drug development. There are other ways that don't turn it into an economic ghetto either. |
