Or \[ ... \] for unnumbered equations.

I would use

  \begin{equation*}
    ...
  \end{equation*}

for consistency and ease of switching between numbered and unnumbered.

It's true, finding modern LaTeX tutorials is even harder that modern c++. It shares many of the same problems.
