Not "plane"=sheet, but "plane" from the Greek "planos"=wandering. (Same root as planet=wandering star).
An aeroplane is a wanderer through the air.

Etymonline disagrees; -plane here is from French planer "to soar," ultimately from Latin planus, "flat."
