Leland Stanford Junior University is the longform name of the Stanford in Palo Alto we all know.
Yup. I feel like I won a small prize at some point on a campus tour for knowing this fact.
I think the long form is less clear - Stanford University is the common name. Stanford is a fine and commonly used abbreviation. Many people don't know the full, long name.
One point of confusion is that there's a Stanford Health Care, despised corporation with some relationship to the school but not exactly the same thing.
