Googling for a library is all well and good, but if you can't evaluate whether it's well designed and well written then you might as well rephrase it as "Google for someone else's problems to add to my own." The background knowledge to understand what you're looking for and looking at is really important in these cases. You mention having and having read TAOCP, that already puts you ahead of >99.99% of the people doing programming out there - 95% of whom couldn't tell you who Knuth is, what he's written, or what Drofnats refers to. |
