One important thing to note is that the 20-year life expectancy includes several firmware updates. An update may take several hours to several days to complete, so, it's not something that is commonly done, but it's an option. I am fairly new to this field and I share your surprise that more formal methods are not used in development. To be honest, the development process in my group and others I'm familiar with can be improved tremendously with just good software development practices like code reviews and improved debugging tools. |
