2016 was the first year I've lived through where I thought to myself "This is a year people will list in the history books." In the same way people know dates like 1929 or 1848; I don't necessarily think things will turn out that consequential in the long run, but I can envision children asking me "So what was it like to live through that?"

2001 was the first time I thought that. Then 2008. Now, I agree, 2016 is on the list.
Why 1848?
Very important year for Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutions_of_1848 (My American education completely ignored it)
In italian there is even a surviving expression "รจ successo un '48" (a 48 happened) that means "everything got messed up/ things got crazy".
