personally I often use google to do stuff like

http://duckduckgo.com/?q=120mph+in+km%2Fh

or

http://duckduckgo.com/?q=1%24+in+€

If I search for x^2 I want to see results related to (x squared), not "X-2" or "X2", etc. The ^ is deliberate and should not be ignored.
