Ask HN: How do you deal with resumes being illogical?
1 points by greenrover 3431 days ago
In my job search, I have encountered a great variation of opinions on resume formats.

1) Objective

-- one professor, one career adviser at my university, and a professional resume writer/tech recruiter whom I paid, told me objective sections were mandatory.

-- a bunch of other people, including HN people, didn't like objectives.

2) Structure

-- No one can ever agree whether my education should be on top or bottom.

3) Wording, Grammar, and Punctuation

-- No one can ever agree on these. It's either alright, or there's a combination of things wrong with it, depending on who you ask. It's either using the wrong verbs, or being "too negative" somehow.

-- Some people like periods everywhere, even for wrong grammar. Some think it's a requirement for everything to require a period.

-- Some people think words are misspelled, when they're actually spelled a correct way.

4) Skills

-- One person says it's not necessary to have a "proficient/noob" section for all skills.

-- A hiring manager says it's important, and the more IDE you can list, the better.

Do you get my drift? It can be disheartening to get rejected, just because someone didn't agree with a non-important issue on your resume, even when you have the right skills listed and explained. Maybe you don't experience this, but for someone who really needs a job, it's very problematic.
