I believe it sounds like desperation because of the societal constructs that make it a stigma to use this drug. If one looks at it from a purely medical point of view, I don't see why this should be construed any different from any current treatment that exists out there. As with most drugs - this would sound true - "The benefits of this treatment outweigh the potential side effects". For the woman's position, she has reached a point to see this truth clearly.
