Usually this discussion is around residents' performing worse while deprived. A big problem no doubt. But I wonder why people don't bring up another aspect: sleep is essential for actually retaining and making any learning from practice permanent. Anyone who has trained or studied anything knows this well and it's clear in the literature. How can we expect these doctors in training to be actually learning and improving if they are so often sleep deprived? |
