We can save a good percentage of those 35k people that die every year, at least a few 9/11's a year with just a bit of funding for traffic safety improvements. I remember as a kid going to a section of railroad track with my mother, where I then asked her why we were here. She said to me "This is where I saved 4 lives a year, this 6 block section of track." One section of sidewalk and a small wood pedestrian bridge saved 2 to 3 kids and 1 to 2 adults (mostly women on their morning jog) from dying every year. That was one of her proudest accomplishments, even if it was one of the most minor projects she ever did. Simple safety improvements can save many lives, and economically are a great investment. Every dead person is a net loss for the US economically & socially. On a tangent here, we can fight for a better future, but we need to get Americans protesting for it in streets all across America. |
