Self driving cars were serious research more than 10 years ago.

Yes but it wasn't even remotely seen as possible by the masses for decades to come. It's already here now.

Are you aware that in Singapur, driver less cabs are already in service? And that many of the biggies have plans for autonomous cars within a few years?
That's a link to an about a company who is testing autonomous taxis. You could also link to Google's self driving car tests. Neither are ready for sale to the general public.
