I succumbed to the Messenger app and the first thing it did was message a random handful of my friends to say I've joined Messenger... instant uninstall. Now I also just use the web client and if I want to read my messages on my phone I can do that by requesting the desktop site.

You can also request the mobile site (m.facebook.com), but with a desktop user interface. This seems to be the most practical way of reading Facebook messages on mobile at this time.
