It's less opaque - there's an abstract, references/citations, etc. Also, I suspect I'm not the only one who doesn't want to be directly linked to things like PDFs that have a history of causing security issues.
As long as you're not appreciating that because you're thinking the page with the abstract would be smaller, the PDF is about 30% the size of the web page.
