How does the nonstandard sip port help? I'm in the middle of a large-to-me Asterisk install, and I'd like to know if there's something I'm missing.

If you use a standard sip port without filtering you will get a load of autocalls from people just portscanning and calling open IP addresses, probably looking to gain access to unsecured pbx boxes. I just have a single sip phone, no pbx, so they come across as calls. Nonstandard port fixes that. Probably not the most secure solution though, intended to be temporary.
