Not so much a secret lab, as a development fork that is maintained in parallel to shake down and stabilize before being put into the wider use. Look at the kernel, where larger charges are developed and tested outside the main tree, and then applies for inclusion. Never mind Torvalds' mantra about not breaking user space. Sadly user space seems highly adept at breaking itself repeatedly... |
