It's very misleading indeed. And regardless of what has grown the most lately, the top industry in the US by far is Finance (19% of GDP) followed by Government and Manufacturing (12% each). 'Tech' is scattered across various industries, I think for the most part is included in Business Services and in Information. It's simply not nearly as important as some seem to think it is.
