Yes, the interactivity (search, zoom, pan, satellite, topo, traffic, earth, streetview) of google maps acts very much like other dimensions to the map and makes it QUALITATIVELY different from paper maps. The complaints of the OP are perfectly valid but they're more a matter of taste than an example of bad design decisions. Maybe the OP would be satisfied with a couple of sliders?
