I kinda cringed at the same thing. I think the key escape-word there, though, is the "enshrining" of design patterns.

Enshrining anything is bad. But, directly after agreeing with semantic compression via abstraction, patterns, and DRY, attacking design patterns seems ass-backwards as that's precisely what they're supposed to do.
