Maybe that's my poor understanding of English but I feel that "taking pride in failure" is a strange choice of words. I would say you can be proud of making the effort but why be proud of failing?

OTOH you shouldn't be ashamed of failing to understand something straight away, and more importantly you should not be afraid of asking loudly for a better explanation.
