I doubt that this alone was all they needed. Probably once they had identified the vendors of the equipment, they retrieved the purchase orders from those vendors, either with or without the knowledge of said vendors.

Regardless, it's a pretty industrious tactic, albeit obvious, still impressive - esp considering what they produced building on that info the gleaned.
It also helps the idea that the highest administration at the time brought about their own downfall with something as trivial as a pr stunt.
Which is why it says they "helped," implying there were other factors.
