What makes you think so? Developing intuition through pattern recognition has a lot to do with human-like general intelligence.

This is way different from chess programs, which work in a way that's much closer to brute force than human-like pattern recognition.

Brute force statistical inference over millions of examples is an advance, but it is an advance that falls within the same paradigm of machine learning that we've had for decades. IMO, it will really take a paradigm shift to move into general intelligence.
