Clicking outside the image should close it. That's pretty standard nowadays.

I've just found out that some users (not hackers) click or tap somewhere if they want to close or do something with it even if they don't know how to interact with it in the next step.

me too, but there's an X in the top right

I believe there is an X to close it but it is in the upper right hand corner of the page not in the upper right hand corner of the image as one would expect.

Its there, all the way at the top right.
