interesting the antiques market is doing so poorly while the vintage watch market is on the up and up.

Recent record breaking sale of an omega speedmaster:

And it wasn't even one that's been on the moon like this one:

The article implies jewellery is doing well (or at least better) in the second paragraph, and I'd suspect that high end watches would follow that a bit more than furniture. Things you can show off more easily still selling well?
Watches, pens, jewelry have appeals for both their function and their form. They're also easily stored and cycled through based on your current attire or preference. It's a bit harder to do that with furniture.

"I feel like sitting on something a bit 1850s Paris this week, let's just slide this other couch to the storage room." Not happening unless you're very wealthy or very in debt.

You can also sell them to support your habit. A coworker does that with watches. He can usually sell them for at least as much as he purchased them for, and uses that money to change out his collection.

collectible jewelry is viewed a lot like currency; it's small and transportable. given political upheaval, would you rather carry a wardrobe or a ring?
try selling a ring in a poor area, people don't care anymore
You can visit a nearby richer aree to sell a ring.
