Well, sometimes, if they don't have the resources to pay a later charged number they'll be sold. I can not remember the name of the documentary where I saw that. But basically if you're crossing the border with the help of a 'pollero' (who most likely has a connection to the cartel), and you or your family don't have resources to pay a fee after you're across the border they take you until you pay for it with work (sexual for women) which can take years regardless of how fast they get that amount due to your work.
