By those definitions, equality is a special case of equivalence - one that simply neglects to strongly emphasize function (which could be taken as value; the latter still doesn't mean 'identical'). 5 x 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3
and
5 x 3 = 5 + 5 + 5 are both numerically equal and functionally equivalent. The student at least understands the commutative property of multiplication, unlike the teacher. |
