Ask HN: Those with a non-technical background, how did you get into tech?

I have been in tech for almost 10 years or so now. I have recently started mentoring women from various backgrounds (publishing, marketing, teaching etc.) who are taking coding bootcamps or self studying.

The concern that comes up again and again is that they are at a disadvantage because they come from a non-technical background. They are worried that a recruiter will take a look at their previous background and deem them unfit for the tech job that they are applying to.

I am having trouble convincing people that there are many who have gone into tech without a computer science degree. I want to ask you HNers, those of you with a non-technical background how did you make the transition? What worked? What didn't? How did you explain the transition to recruiters? Specific details would be great!
