I had trouble getting it to recognize my "arrow"

The arrow has to be made by starting the head on the left side, drawing back to the center, and ending on the right

Same here. It seems like it's very picky.

Stroke order matters. As does amount of strokes per gesture.

Once you get that, it's fairly accurate.
