Well, it's Elsevier. The fact that it only potentially exploited your system and didn't attempt to grab your banking password might actually be taken as a legitimate sign of improvement.
Marketing thinks like this, "Will it force users to experience our message", "Yes", "Then it's a fucking awesome grade A great idea".
Western Digital includes one of these in their Black2 drive kits. Instead of shipping with a driver CD, it ships with a USB key that opens up your browser to the webpage that hosts the driver download.
