In many ways WebGL is akin to a plugin. It's effectively replaced what plugins like Flash and Silverlight offered in the past by bolting on a new piece of functionality to the browsers. The difference is the browser vendors are in control of the implementation that will make it slightly more secure, but it's still a long way from the HTML/JS/CSS environment people though would replace plugins. |
