I was assured last week that things like this are fine and we should be responsible adults by settling for "good enough" when it comes to self-driving cars.

It's absolutely not fine.

But I would note that we are already settling for "good enough" by letting those responsible adults cause 6 million accidents and 40,000 deaths.

Tesla's Autopilot is worse. But people aren't great.

I hold out a tiny modicum of hope that the cars will get better. If not Elmo's version, then somebody's. Because the people are not getting better, and are arguably getting worse.

Yeah but that was Waymo. This time it’s Tesla.
Exactly. Waymo is already much better at driving than Tesla will ever be. They deserve a pass for actually moving the technology forward.
I'm cool with letting human beings stay in charge of operating motor vehicles.
No desire to vibe drive?
And so it starts… modern robot machinery wiping out all humans? And for now they make it look like random accidents?

Sci-fi aside: We probably will see a slow but very steady increase of such events in the coming years with more unnecessary automation applied everywhere.

Don't let one company's failure tarnish the entire field.
Amazon had a robot incident, Google, probably others too.
