Abortion bans don’t stop abortions. They simply disincentivize safe, sanctioned abortions, and increase travel distances for those seeking reproductive healthcare. This is lost on certain voter cohorts and policymakers.
I’m not sure if conservatives think through things this far, but generally the availability and acceptance of get out of jail free cards must influence behavior. Behavior shifted as a result of these cards becoming available, and I imagine some people would like to shift behavior back to how it used to be. A shift back could take awhile, just as the shift here did.
I say this as somebody who is pro abortion rights, I just like to understand the opposing viewpoint.
Effectiveness isn’t in the interest of the politicans.

Their end goal is a total Christian theocracy, a society purged of idolatry, secularism and heresy, and eventually ushering in the Second Coming, which many of them believe will require alliance with Israel in a nuclear war against Islam. The world is still full of "demons" for them to fear.
