Show HN: Didtheyhack.me – A Simple, Privacy-Focused Data Breach Checker (didtheyhack.me)

Hi HN,

I'm an indie dev with a deep interest in cybersecurity, and I’ve just launched DidTheyHack.me. It's a tool that lets you check if your personal information has been compromised in data breaches.

Key features:

Privacy-first: No passwords or sensitive details are shown in plain text.

Ethical approach: The site gives you just enough information to take action, without exposing more than necessary.

Straightforward: Enter your email or username, and find out if you’ve been part of any known breaches.

I built this because I wanted a simple, ethical tool that respects user privacy while helping them stay informed. It's a small project, but I'm excited to share it with you and get your feedback.

Would love to hear what you think and any suggestions for improvement!

In the current breach-heavy environment, hiding results behind a paywall seems like a dark pattern. haveibeenpwned is a trustworthy alternative IMO
Agreed. Plus the "Reduced from USD99 to USD20!" pitch is laughable.
Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your concern. I completely understand where you're coming from. The goal of DidTheyHack.me is to complement services like Have I Been Pwned. We offer free searches so users can quickly see if their data has been compromised. The paid feature is there for those who want to know exactly what information was exposed.

I made the decision to hide sensitive details like passwords (e.g., passw***), even in the paid version, to strike a balance between user security and preventing abuse. My hope is that by showing just enough information, users can identify their leaked data without exposing themselves to further risk.

I appreciate the feedback, and I’m always open to suggestions on how to make the service better for everyone.
