Backlinks – Make your website seen Google Search results (github.com)

I work in SEO - this is a total and complete waste of time. Domain authority is one of thousands of ranking signals, and within that the nature of a backlink is one that Google scrutinises deeply.

Grabbing a bunch of free links from sites that hand them out like candy is going to barely move the needle in the best case scenario, and do nothing in the worst case.

And then we have the paid links. It's against Google's quality guidelines to sell links that pass pagerank. Any links that are created as part of any kind of compensation deal like a payment or trade should be nofollowed or better yet marked as sponsored.

Google then determines if any authority should flow between such sites, but in 99% of cases the answer is 'no'.

What is your suggestion for building backlinks and increase domain authority? Any hacks would you like to share with us?
First, you have to understand how Google determines these things. PageRank is a simple algorithm designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin from 1998. Google still uses its principles but it has moved on drastically since then.

The model they now use to rank a site in search is HUGE. Backlinks are a tiny part of it and very complex in their own right.

There are no hacks or cheatcodes to boost your site.

Some large companies will go as far as employing expensive SEO agencies to farm out content and build satellite link networks that will boost their rankings slightly. And even then those networks tend to be actual functional websites that provide some form of value to a user - like a news aggregator in a specific niche, or a product comparison site. Small companies can't 'hack' that kind of thing together over a weekend. Plus, such tactics can fail spectacularly if Google detects it and decides it should be ignored, or even punished. Google's entire modern model of ranking is based on gathering data on 'SEO hacks'. Nothing you can dream up will be effective for long.

So, instead, drop the hacker mentality on this one and instead just focus on providing value and useful content. Use news aggregators like this one, use discussion platforms like this one, and if your product or service is good enough people will feature links to you naturally on sites that do pass authority.

tl;dr Do not think of links as valuable because of the site they are from, instead think of links as valuable by way of the method they are procured. If you hacked your way into getting a link it's worthless, if someone earnestly wanted to link to you, then it's a valuable link.
