There is already a lot for Google, but let's not forget that there are more search engines out there.

The source shows that it submits the URLs from your sitemap to https://www.indexnow.org

It's not really open source if it just sends the URLs to a closed source third party web service, is it?

The script is (obviously, as you can see the hosted source code on Github) open source. Indexnow is the internal endpoint that those search engines offer to submit urls to them. Not supposed to be open source, no point in having an API backend open sourced for this purpose.
