You are entirely correct. However, it's also important to imagine the future we DON'T want to create, and then do our best to prevent it. Otherwise books like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Dr. Strangelove wouldn't be such beloved classics.
"New SF" taking over in the 60 and 70s had a lot of ideological baggage come along with it. Suppression of disagreement was the most pernicious item. Before then the roaring flamewars over any and all subjects were part of the fun. Read the letters columns in "Astounding Stories" magazines.
