The official government's line is that there are labour shortages that require increased immigration, and that unemployment remains very low.

Then, we read articles like this one. In the stats those people do not count as unemployed.

It's simply because there IS free stuff. They are doing it because they can. Who can judge them?
But why would the number of people receiving it go up? The benefits aren't getting better, are they?
I would argue it's the rise of cynicism that removed any stigma from freeloading off taxpayers' money. So everyone who can do it, does.
This generation is just lazy, don't you know? (/s)
