Overall this short essay resonates with my own views. But Paul does not mention an intermediary step: reflection. Here on HN, we've discussed one of the mechanism for reflection, or our internal dialogue that germinates ideas.

So in closing, for me at least, the stage of writing is not the only formative stage of thought.

We read, we conduct an internal debate, and then we write. So read, and write, but don't forget to also reflect.
