When I started using Linux back in 1995 I had a large notebook where I would write down everything that I was doing on the system. This was a way for me to keep track of thing that I've attempted to do, that have worked or have failed.

At that time I was learning Linux and I often reinstalled the system. My notebook has helped me to get the system back to the point that I needed at certain time.
