For me, the article is unnecessary aggressive. There are many methods to order the countries. It's weird that everyone is using one method, and only one country uses a different method.
Anyway, for some weird reason here in Argentina we have better results in team spots, like soccer. So my proposal is to count the number of medals according to the size of the team. Soccer is 11, volleyball is 6, basketball is 5, 100 meters dash is 1. Moreover, if the same person wins two medals, (like 100m and 200m) than only 1 point is counted for the country. (If one person wins a gold and a silver, then only the gold one is counted.)
You can use the version that count the total number of medals, or the version where gold is more important, or the version with 3-2-1 discussed in the article.
