Most likely methane dissolved in well water. Came out of solution in the tank. Wells that produce water with dissolved methane need scrubbers and forced air ventilation on the tanks.

What caused that explosion? Lots of ordinary materials, like grain or milk powder, can explode in a spectacular fashion, but water???
