WikiLeaks just dumped all of their files online (file.wikileaks.org)

The /files directory has been online and they've been releasing files there for quite a few years. This isn't some new development.

Here's Internet Archive's snapshot from 2014: https://web.archive.org/web/20141127154059/http://file.wikil...

Archives aren't static.
Obviously.

Your title has the words 'just' implying putting their files online is a brand new development, which I was refuting, and 'all' indicating there are no other files, which is impossible to know.

> WikiLeaks just dumped all their files online

The same mistaken claim has been made in social media posts for so long now, that we are gradually starting to see the emergence of fact-check type pages on the topic. [1]

Not that they're overly informative, mind. The linked 'file' folder is part of WikiLeaks FTP mirror. If one goes up a folder (by clicking ../), one will find a helpful and informative document, entitled HOW-TO-MIRROR.txt

The files here are exactly the same as those served from the front end, via the main WikiLeaks site. Without the convenience of search, nor any accompanying articles for context.

They're not some secret dump of new or previously unreleased documents containing leaks. The folks with the unreleased documents won't be keeping them on a public FTP server.

You sure about that?

Absolutely, 100%

Because I originally looked into this claim that they dumped all of their files online the first time I saw it made, several years ago. And it wasn't true then either. And it's not been true any time the claim has been repeated since.

Here's another post, from a couple of years back, hinting at what this folder is really for [1], and another from 4 years ago saying same [2].

Here's another post debunking the claim this is a new dump, 6 months back [3].

This post from 4 years ago, references the same folder, and one of the comments states it was made public 18th October, 2016 [4].

— What evidence to you have to suggest that these repeated false claims about a new dump suddenly have merit now, in 2021...? Particularly in the light of all of these previous posts over the years debunking the exact same claims, or discussing what the folder actually is.

The only 'evidence' to support the claim, it would seem, is the link to this 'file' folder, plus the claim itself. Which honestly amounts to nothing, and has been doing the rounds for years with no further evidence to substantiate the claim.

Clearly there is lots of easy to find evidence to support the claim that this folder and its contents are nothing new, nor particularly special that is not already offered on WikiLeaks website.

I recall some years ago during a period of uncertainty regarding Assange's safety an encrypted safeguard archive was released and could be downloaded, but I can't find anything about it online now. Were the keys ever revealed, if I'm not misremembering?

I thought that's what they do …
