I speculate the problems were cooling related. I had a handful of 75GXP back in the day, but only had one that had problems. I went to replace it, shut down the machine, and when I pulled it out I noticed it was hot to the touch. Maybe 130F or 140F, not super hot.

I checked the drive operating specs, and they were well above that. There were a couple of open 5" bays that didn't have covers, so I taped some cardboard over them and turned the machine back on. Never hard a problem with that drive after that.
