Show HN: TapeX – Draw, Annotate and Record on your desktop screen (tapex.app)

I am spending hours on zoom calls and start to use the annotate feature alot even if I keep thinking they could be better (i.e. switching to mute while in draw mode).

My 2 questions: - is it thought to be an independent draw tool floating on the screen compared to the built in tools we see? - anychance to combine it with a screenmirror on a tablet with pen (or am I wrongly understanding the benefits)?

Thanks

Can I ask why it's free? Seems like a great tool but I don't see any obvious monetization (which raises privacy concerns)
Thank you for checking it out! The app is free and completely client side right now, there is no tracking code or login required to use it.

I do plan to monetize the app with a pro subscription, by adding premium features such as converting video formats, sharing links of the video, hiding the control bar and more.

The current feature set will remain free and free users can continue to benefit from bug fixes and improvements.

Please try to add only the sharing feature into the pro version and make it cross platform (like cloudapp), you'll get a lot more users that eventually upgrade that way.

Making artificial features in the pro version is just annoying, charge for real value like hosting.

yeah I'm not sure why either... either fully open source it or have some kind of roadmap saying that you plan on monetizing it later or anything. looks useful but I'm concerned about privacy implications of it... when the product is free: you are the product kinda thing.
Despite the seemingly altruistic reason for wanting my email, I'm not willing to do so.

Perhaps you could make the download button still work without that requirement?

Looks like a nifty app. I‘d rather pay than having to list myself on a newsletter, but I could also just use a throwaway?

Why not opensource it completely?

I do plan to monetize with a pro monthly subscription by adding premium features and keeping the app free for the current feature set. The email capture serves as a way for me to get feedback - not to spam you. Otherwise it's hard to engage with users.
suggestion is to have a small link to a "pro version" coming soon or something so people know that there is a reason for asking for the email/more trust in the product
For an opensource screen recorder, try https://github.com/alyssaxuu/screenity
This looks great. I can’t wait to try it.
Looks nice, good job!
