This post is incredibly sensationalist. By the looks of it because of covid and funding problems they decided to go ahead with some redundancies in less productive department such as pure mathematics and mediaeval studies. They are still being taught, they're just not being researched anymore.

I can’t see where it’s sensational when it’s just quoting and plainly stating facts. There’s not even a remark by the author.

I think you’re being the sensationalist here by the prejudice of pure maths and literature being “unproductive”.
